A 15-minute plan to give someone you love a patient, helpful assistant, and the three safety rules that matter most.

The quick answer

Choose one free app (ChatGPT, Google Gemini or Microsoft Copilot), install the official version, sign them in with their own account, put it on the home screen, make the text bigger, and practice three real questions together using the microphone.

The 15-minute setup

  1. Pick one app. Android: Gemini may already be built in. iPhone: ChatGPT or Copilot are easy starts.
  2. Download the official app. Check that the maker is OpenAI, Google or Microsoft. Skip look-alikes, especially any asking for payment up front.
  3. Sign in with their own account, not yours, so their chats stay private.
  4. Close any upgrade offers. The free version is plenty.
  5. Put it on the home screen, right next to Phone and Messages.
  6. Make the text bigger in Settings, under Display or Accessibility.
  7. Show them the microphone button. Talking is often much easier than typing.
  8. Practice together. Have them ask three real questions while you're there.

Three great first questions

Check in next week

Call a week later and ask, "What did you ask it this week?" That single question keeps the habit going.

Hi! I'm new to this. Please always answer me in plain, simple English, use short sentences, and avoid technical words. If an answer has steps, number them. If I ask about my health, money or anything legal, remind me to double-check with a real professional. Let's start: [their first question].

Write these on a sticky note: (1) never share passwords, bank or card numbers, or ID numbers with the AI or anyone who calls or texts; (2) AI can be wrong, so check medicine, money and legal matters with a professional or family member; (3) if a message says "act now," stop and call family first.

Common questions

Which AI app is best for an elderly parent?

The one that fits their phone: Gemini on many Android phones, ChatGPT or Copilot on iPhone. All are free and work by voice.

Should they use my account?

No. Set them up with their own account so their conversations stay private and the settings suit them.

Can I do this over a video call?

Yes. Share screens or have them follow the steps while you watch. The whole setup takes about 15 minutes.
