Investing disclaimer

The short version

Money in Plain English is general education, not personalized investment advice and not a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any security. Ask It Simply is not a registered investment adviser or broker-dealer. Investing involves risk, including loss of principal. Examples are illustrative; past and hypothetical results don't guarantee future results. Do your own research and talk to a licensed professional about your situation.

1. Education only

Money in Plain English (“the content”) is published by Ask It Simply for general educational and informational purposes. It explains how money, saving and investing work in general terms. It is not investment, financial, tax, legal or accounting advice, and it is not an offer or a solicitation to buy or sell any security, fund, cryptocurrency or other financial product, or to use any particular strategy.

2. General and impersonal, not personalized advice

The content is written for a broad audience and published on a regular schedule. It does not consider your goals, income, savings, debts, taxes, timeline or tolerance for risk, and it is not tailored to any individual. We do not give individual advice by email, reply, direct message, comment or any other channel. If you write to us about your own situation, any response will be general education only. Please don't send us account numbers or other sensitive financial details.

3. Not a registered investment adviser or broker-dealer

Ask It Simply, Dontè, and anyone who helps create the content are not registered investment advisers, broker-dealers, financial planners or tax professionals, and are not registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), FINRA or any state securities regulator. We do not manage money, hold client funds, or execute trades for anyone.

4. Do your own research and talk to a licensed professional

You are responsible for your own financial decisions. Before you invest or change your finances, do your own research and consider talking to a licensed financial professional, such as a registered investment adviser, a certified financial planner, or a tax professional, who can review your full situation. You can check a professional's background for free at FINRA BrokerCheck and the SEC's adviser search.

5. Investing involves risk

All investing involves risk, including the possible loss of the money you put in (your principal). Prices go up and down, sometimes quickly. Some years are negative. Dividends can be cut or stopped. Fractional shares, margin, options and other products have their own rules and risks. Margin and options in particular can lead to losses larger than your original deposit and are not suitable for everyone. Diversification and risk rules do not guarantee a profit or protect against loss.

6. Past and hypothetical results are not guarantees

Past performance does not guarantee future results. Any example of growth, returns or a past chart setup is shown to explain an idea, not to predict what will happen or to suggest you will get similar results.

Hypothetical and illustrative results. Many examples use made-up or assumed numbers, such as a steady 7% yearly return. Hypothetical results have built-in limits: they are prepared with the benefit of hindsight, do not involve real money or real trading, assume conditions (like steady returns) that rarely happen in real life, and usually ignore taxes, fees, inflation and the emotions of real decisions. Real results will differ, and could be much worse. Backtests or case studies of past setups, if we show them, are also hypothetical, may not reflect how a strategy would have been carried out in real time, and will be labeled as such.

7. No compensation from the companies we discuss

We don't accept payment from any company, fund or brokerage to mention, feature or recommend its securities in Money in Plain English. If that ever changes, or if a link is an affiliate or sponsored link that pays us, we will clearly say so next to it. A mention of a company, fund or product is an example used for teaching, never a recommendation.

8. Holdings and conflicts of interest

People who create the content may personally own investments, including ones that are discussed in general terms. We never share anyone's own account, positions, trades or results. If a lesson ever names a specific security, we will state whether Dontè or anyone who helped write that lesson owns it at the time of publishing (without sharing amounts or account details), and the author will not buy or sell that security for [3] business days before and after the lesson is sent. We will not use the content to influence the price of anything we own.

9. Accuracy, tools and changes

We work hard to keep the content accurate and up to date, and lessons are fact-checked, but we can make mistakes, and laws, tax rules, fees and products change. Research and drafting may be assisted by AI tools, and every lesson is reviewed before it's sent. Information is provided “as is,” without warranties. Check important details with the original source, your broker, or a licensed professional.

10. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent allowed by law, Ask It Simply and its contributors are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of, or reliance on, the content. By using the content, you agree that you are responsible for your own decisions.

11. Paid products

If we ever offer paid lessons, courses or a paid tier, this disclaimer applies to them too. Paid content is still general education, not personalized advice, and will never include buy or sell signals or trade alerts.
